Human Name Spinners

August 22nd, 2007 · 1 Comment

This Article in Wired made me smile. Interestingly (and not surprisingly) one of the first things I did when both my daughters were born was to register their domain names. Riley who is now 5 got RileyWoods.com and Maya now 2 got MayaWoods.com. These are set to auto renew forever which I think is a pretty cool gift for any kid. Given that I will likely never own JamesWoods.com (hence the Warpjam.com nonsense ;-))

Now I work in the Domain industry and own a few registrars so I’m not your typical registrant. But word is certainly getting out regarding the overall value of domain names and that’s a great thing for the industry and an opportunity for people who are in the name spinning business (You hear that my Italian friends!!)

Two things might eventually happen here. Some company with deep pockets might go name hunting and register all variations of human name possibilities and then park them and eventually sell them for a tidy profit. Or services that cater to spinning names for newly minted parents will start to Pop up. Probably a combination of the two will occur. Right now the domain name industry is more focused on freeform name spinning based on things/objects and places. I see a stronger shift that caters to more personal needs. Time will tell.
